ABOUT J.B PATNAIK

Janaki Ballabh Patnaik was one of Odisha’s most influential political leaders, remembered for his long tenure in public life and his contributions to literature. He served as the Chief Minister of Odisha for two consecutive terms from 1980 to 1989 and returned to the post again from 1995 to 1999. Later, he was appointed as the Governor of Assam, a position he held from 2009 to 2014.

Born in Khurda, Patnaik had a strong academic background and was a scholar of Sanskrit. Before entering active politics, he built a reputation in journalism and worked as the editor of prominent newspapers such as Eastern Times and Prajatantra.

Apart from politics, Patnaik was also known for his literary interests. A respected writer, he translated important texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Mahabharata into Odia, helping make these classical works more accessible to readers in the state. His life reflected a rare blend of political leadership, intellectual depth and cultural contribution.

Jayanti Patnaik was a prominent Indian politician and dedicated social worker who played a pioneering role in advancing women’s rights in the country. Born on 7 April 1932, she emerged as a strong advocate for gender equality and social justice through her public service.

She made history by becoming the first Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, serving from 3 February 1992 to 30 January 1995. During her tenure, she helped shape the early direction of the commission and worked towards strengthening institutional support for women’s empowerment and protection of their rights.

Remembered for her commitment to social causes and public welfare, Jayanti Patnaik left a lasting legacy in the field of women’s advocacy in India.
